The Mongol invasion of 1241 emptied and frightened the kingdom, and the years afterwards are full of charters meant to put people back on the land. On 4 February 1246 the archbishop of Esztergom, Štefan Vanča, granted Svätý Kríž the privileges of a landlord's town — a market town belonging to a lord rather than to the king. That is the moment it stopped being a village. The estate around it was divided between the archbishop's men and the abbey at Hronský Beňadik. Panstvo okolo neho si delili arcibiskupovi ľudia a opátstvo v Hronskom Beňadiku.
