1075 A cross by the riverKríž pri rieke

The place first appears in writing in 1075, in the charter with which King Géza I founded the Benedictine abbey at Hronský Beňadik downstream. It was named for a cross — Kríž in Slovak, written in Latin documents as Cristur and Sancta Crux, in Hungarian Garamszentkereszt. From the beginning it was church land rather than royal or noble land, and that shaped the next eight centuries: its lords wore mitres, not helmets.Po prvý raz sa toto miesto spomína v písomnosti v roku 1075, v listine, ktorou kráľ Gejza I. založil benediktínske opátstvo v Hronskom Beňadiku nižšie po prúde. Od začiatku to bola cirkevná, nie kráľovská ani šľachtická pôda, a to určilo nasledujúcich osem storočí: tunajší páni nosili mitry, nie prilby.
