After 1989 the district became one of the areas of highest unemployment in Slovakia, and Tisovec's answer was the thing it had always been good at. The Lutheran church refounded a grammar school in the town in the 1990s, teaching partly in English, and it draws pupils from well beyond the valley. In a place that would otherwise be steadily emptying, a school is not a cultural ornament; it is the reason a certain number of families stay.Po roku 1989 sa okres stal jedným z krajov s najvyššou nezamestnanosťou na Slovensku a Tisovec odpovedal tým, v čom bol vždy dobrý. Evanjelická cirkev v deväťdesiatych rokoch v meste obnovila gymnázium, ktoré učí sčasti po anglicky a priťahuje žiakov aj zďaleka za dolinou.
