Tisovec became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918, and the new border a short way to the south cut the works off from the rest of their own company, whose Hungarian furnaces were suddenly in another country. Vladimír Clementis had been born in the town in 1902; he studied law, became a communist, and by the 1930s was one of the best-known Slovak intellectuals of the left. It is worth holding both facts about Tisovec together: a small iron town in the mountains produced the author of the Memorandum and a future communist foreign minister within eighty years of each other.
