The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie

The kingdom collapsed after the battle of Mohács in 1526, and Gemer spent the next century and a half divided between two states. The Ottomans took Fiľakovo in 1554 and the southern half of the region passed under their tax collectors; Tisovec, at the head of the valley with mountains behind it, was awkward enough to reach to be comparatively safe. In the same century the town went over to the Lutheran Reformation, and that is the decision that shaped everything afterwards: for the next four hundred years Tisovec's schools, its charity and eventually its politics all came out of the Lutheran congregation.
