9th century A Great Moravian fort on the rockVeľkomoravské hradisko na skale

In the early Middle Ages there was a Great Moravian hillfort on Kalamárka, on the rock above the valley. That puts the Podpoľanie inside the world of the Slav state that governed from Nitra and Devín in the ninth century, the state that received Cyril and Methodius — even though nothing here was a centre of anything. Forts like this were refuges and lookouts on the edge of settled country, and what we know about them comes out of the ground rather than out of documents. Only two periods of use are recorded on Kalamárka, the Bronze Age and the Great Moravian one, so after the ninth century the rock seems to have been left alone again.V ranom stredoveku stálo na Kalamárke, na skale nad dolinou, veľkomoravské hradisko. Podpoľanie tým patrí do sveta slovanského štátu, ktorý v 9. storočí spravoval krajinu z Nitry a Devína a ku ktorému prišli Cyril a Metod — hoci tu nikdy nijaké mocenské centrum nebolo. Takéto hradiská slúžili ako útočisko a strážne miesto na okraji osídlenej krajiny a to, čo o nich vieme, pochádza zo zeme, nie z listín. Z Kalamárky sú doložené len dve obdobia využitia, doba bronzová a veľkomoravské, takže po 9. storočí skala zrejme opäť osamela.
