In 1955 a large engineering plant was built on the edge of Detva, in the woods: the Podpolianske strojárne (PPS). It was built for military machinery and heavy strategic structures, and its position deep inland was part of the point — that kind of production was deliberately placed far from any frontier. It changed everything. A town of shepherds' descendants got shift work, blocks of flats, a technical school and thousands of new inhabitants, and in 1965 Detva was granted the status of a town. The folk festival under Poľana, running since the 1960s, dates from the same decade: the culture of the lazy went up on a stage in the new town.V roku 1955 postavili na okraji Detvy, v lese, veľký strojársky podnik — Podpolianske strojárne (PPS). Vznikol pre vojenskú techniku a ťažké strategické konštrukcie a jeho poloha hlboko vo vnútrozemí bola súčasťou zámeru: takáto výroba sa z bezpečnostných dôvodov umiestňovala čo najďalej od hraníc. Zmenilo to všetko. Mesto potomkov pastierov dostalo zmeny, sídlisko, priemyslovku a tisíce nových obyvateľov a v roku 1965 získala Detva štatút mesta. Z tých istých rokov pochádzajú aj folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou, ktoré sa konajú od šesťdesiatych rokov: kultúra lazov sa dostala na javisko nového mesta.
