Hiding people in the mountains was paid for down in the valleys. In neighbouring Hriňová the Germans shot nine villagers for helping partisans, and at Kremnička outside Banská Bystrica 747 people were shot between November 1944 and February 1945. Then the front arrived and stuck. The first Red Army patrols reached the edge of Hriňová, upstream from Detva, on 31 January 1945, and the Germans held on there until 11 February; downstream, Vígľaš and Zvolenská Slatina were taken on 25 February, and Zvolen itself only on 14 March. For six weeks the fighting line ran across the Podpoľanie and its scattered farms, and the villages here changed hands one ridge at a time.Za to, že hory ukrývali ľudí, sa platilo dole v dolinách. Šesť týždňov viedla bojová línia naprieč Podpoľaním a jeho lazmi a dediny tu prechádzali z ruky do ruky hrebeň po hrebeni.
