Detva was created deliberately, on the instruction of Ladislav Čáky (Ladislaus Csáky), who then held the Vígľaš estate. The date usually given is 1638; some accounts put the whole process at 1636–1638. The land he settled was deep forest that had belonged to the older villages downstream, Zvolenská Slatina and Očová. The people who came were herders and woodsmen, and they were serfs: in exchange for the right to clear and farm they owed the estate labour and dues. All this was happening while the Ottoman frontier was uncomfortably close — Zvolenská Slatina, ten kilometres away, paid tribute to the Turks from 1584 until 1668 — which is worth remembering when the founding of Detva sounds peaceful.Detva nevznikla náhodou.
