The new village built itself a Renaissance church between 1662 and 1664 — a generation after the first settlers came, which is about how long it takes a clearing to turn into a parish. Meanwhile the population grew fast and the settlement did something unusual: instead of the village getting bigger, families moved out and up. Each new household cleared its own patch high on the slope and built a single farmstead on it, with its fields and hay meadows around it.
