In 1996 Detva became the seat of its own district, which put the offices a Podpoľanie family needs in the town rather than in Zvolen. The engineering works survived the end of the planned economy and still makes heavy welded steel structures and undercarriage parts for construction machinery, so the town's fortunes rise and fall with the world market for excavators. The other thing Detva lives on is what its isolation preserved: the carved oak grave crosses in the cemetery, every one of them different; the festival in the amphitheatre each July; and Poľana itself, now a protected landscape area and a UNESCO biosphere reserve.V roku 1996 sa Detva stala sídlom vlastného okresu, takže úrady, ktoré podpolianska rodina potrebuje, sú v meste a nie vo Zvolene. Strojárne prežili koniec plánovanej ekonomiky a dodnes vyrábajú ťažké zvárané oceľové konštrukcie a časti podvozkov pre stavebné stroje, takže mesto stúpa a klesá spolu so svetovým dopytom po bagroch. Druhá vec, z ktorej Detva žije, je to, čo zachovala jej izolácia: vyrezávané dubové kríže na cintoríne, každý iný; júlové slávnosti v amfiteátri; a samotná Poľana, dnes chránená krajinná oblasť a biosférická rezervácia UNESCO.
