Černová had built itself a church. The villagers raised about 80,000 crowns — an enormous sum for a village of smallholders, helped by donations from Slovaks who had emigrated to America — and the neo-Gothic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, designed by the architect Milan Michal Harminc, was finished in 1907. They wanted Hlinka, their own native son, to consecrate it; he was suspended and away, and the bishop sent Hungarian-speaking priests instead, with the dean Martin Pazúrik to perform the blessing. On the morning of 27 October the people of Černová stood in the road and would not let the carriages through. A squad of gendarmes was escorting the party; their commander, Sergeant Ján Ladiczky, gave the order to fire — in Hungarian — and seven gendarmes shot into the crowd. Fifteen villagers were killed: nine on the spot, four the next day, two later in a hospital in Budapest. Twelve more were seriously wounded and about forty lightly. Five of the seven men who fired were themselves Slovaks.Černová si postavila kostol. Chceli, aby ho vysvätil Hlinka, ich vlastný rodák; ten bol suspendovaný a mimo domova, a biskup poslal namiesto neho maďarsky hovoriacich kňazov, posvätiť kostol mal dekan Martin Pazúrik. Ráno 27. októbra sa ľudia z Černovej postavili do cesty a vozy ďalej nepustili. Sprievod sprevádzala čata žandárov; ich veliteľ, strážmajster Ján Ladiczký, vydal povel na streľbu — po maďarsky — a sedem žandárov vpálilo do zástupu. Pätnásť ľudí zahynulo: deväť na mieste, štyria na druhý deň, dvaja neskôr v nemocnici v Budapešti. Dvanásti utrpeli ťažké zranenia, asi štyridsať ľahké. Piati zo siedmich, čo strieľali, boli sami Slováci.
