In 1233 King Andrew II gave a piece of land called Revúca — terra Reuche in the Latin of the charter — to a man named Hudko. That document is the first time this place appears in writing, which is a fact about a parchment and not about when people arrived: the valley floor where the Revúca joins the Váh was being farmed long before anyone wrote it down. Some time before the 1320s German settlers founded a settlement here and called it Rosenberg, rose mountain. Slovak simply translated the name into Ružomberok and Hungarian into Rózsahegy — three languages, one place, and you can still read all three on old maps.V roku 1233 daroval kráľ Ondrej II. zem zvanú Revúca — v latinčine listiny terra Reuche — mužovi menom Hudko. Ešte pred dvadsiatymi rokmi štrnásteho storočia tu nemeckí osadníci založili osadu a nazvali ju Rosenberg, ružový vrch. Slovenčina meno jednoducho preložila na Ružomberok, maďarčina na Rózsahegy — tri jazyky, jedno miesto, a na starých mapách nájdete všetky tri.
