The uprisings against the Habsburgs that ran through Hungary for half a century ended, for Ružomberok, with the loss of the castle above it. During the Rákóczi uprising of 1703–1711 Likava was deliberately slighted — pulled down far enough that nobody could hold it as a stronghold again — and it has been a ruin ever since. Remember that whenever you hear that a Slovak castle was 'destroyed by the Turks': far more of them were wrecked on purpose, by order, after an uprising, than were ever taken by an Ottoman army.
