In the Great Moravian centuries the Turiec was already fairly densely settled, and the clearest proof is a group of ninth- and tenth-century burial mounds at Priekopa, today a district of Martin. An important road crossed the basin from the Nitra country towards Poland, and Slav villages grew along it. No fortress and no princely seat of that century has been found in the basin. The Turiec belonged to the Moravian world as its quiet hinterland — a place people farmed and passed through, not a place that was defended.Vo veľkomoravských storočiach bol Turiec osídlený už pomerne husto a najlepším dôkazom je skupina mohýl z 9. a 10. storočia v Priekope, dnes mestskej časti Martina. Kotlinou viedla dôležitá cesta z Ponitria do Poľska a popri nej vznikali slovanské osady. Nijaká pevnosť ani kniežacie sídlo z tohto storočia sa v kotline nenašli. Turiec patril do moravského sveta ako jeho tiché zázemie — miesto, kde sa hospodárilo a kadiaľ sa prechádzalo, nie miesto, ktoré sa bránilo.
