The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

The Mongol army swept through the kingdom in 1241, and Turiec's answer — like the rest of Slovakia's — came afterwards rather than during. The oldest local accounts say King Béla IV sheltered at Zniev castle at the head of the basin, and that he rewarded the men who helped defend it, among them the men of Vrútky, with estates and the rank of zeman (petty gentry) on condition that they kept armed men ready. That is why Turiec ended up with one of the thickest layers of small nobility in the whole kingdom: hundreds of minor noble families in small villages, each with a scrap of land and a claim to be somebody. Martin appears in no document of these years at all. Its written history begins only once the new castles are standing.V roku 1241 sa cez kráľovstvo prehnalo mongolské vojsko a odpoveď Turca — tak ako celého Slovenska — prišla až po ňom, nie počas neho.
