The Turiec was drawn into the Kingdom of Hungary at the beginning of the twelfth century, and at first it was administered from the Upper Nitra region rather than from anywhere inside the basin. In the thirteenth century the whole valley was run from Sklabiňa castle in the hills to the north-east. That is the arrangement to remember, because it lasts for centuries: the castle owns the land, and the market village below does the trading and the arguing. The village's own name came from its church, dedicated to St Martin, the bishop of Tours in France. Today's parish church, early Gothic and built in the second half of the thirteenth century, stands on the site of a rotunda from the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries — the oldest church layer known here.Turiec sa stal súčasťou Uhorského kráľovstva začiatkom 12. storočia a spočiatku ho spravovali z Ponitria, nie z kotliny samotnej. V 13. storočí patrilo celé údolie pod správu Sklabinského hradu v kopcoch na severovýchode. Toto usporiadanie si treba zapamätať, lebo vydrží stáročia: hrad vlastní pôdu a trhová dedina pod ním obchoduje a domáha sa práv. Meno dostala obec podľa kostola zasväteného svätému Martinovi, biskupovi z francúzskeho Tours. Dnešný farský kostol, ranogotická stavba z druhej polovice 13. storočia, stojí na mieste rotundy z prelomu 12. a 13. storočia — najstaršej kostolnej vrstvy, akú tu poznáme.
