On the evening of Sunday 27 August 1944 men working with the partisans stopped the Bucharest–Berlin express at Martin station and took off a German military group travelling home from Romania — armed Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS men, with two civilians and two young women. They were told the track ahead was damaged and offered quarters in the barracks. The Turiec partisan commander Piotr Veličko demanded that they be disarmed or liquidated; the garrison commander Emil Perko was against it and was overruled by his own subordinate, Lieutenant Cyril Kuchta, who obeyed the partisan instead. At dawn on 28 August the group was shot in the barracks yard: twenty died on the spot, and the wounded were taken to Sklabiňa and killed there, twenty-four in all. Berlin now had the proof it wanted that Slovakia was out of control, and German troops crossed the border on 29 August — the day the Slovak National Uprising began.V nedeľu večer 27. augusta 1944 zastavili spolupracovníci partizánov na martinskej stanici medzinárodný rýchlik Bukurešť – Berlín a vyviedli z neho nemeckú vojenskú skupinu vracajúcu sa z Rumunska — ozbrojených príslušníkov Wehrmachtu a Waffen-SS, s ktorými cestovali dvaja civilisti a dve dievčatá. Povedali im, že trať je poškodená, a ponúkli im nocľah v kasárňach. Veliteľ turčianskych partizánov Piotr Veličko žiadal skupinu odzbrojiť alebo zlikvidovať; veliteľ posádky Emil Perko bol proti a prehlasoval ho vlastný podriadený, nadporučík Cyril Kuchta, ktorý poslúchol partizána. Za svitania 28. augusta skupinu na dvore kasární postrieľali: dvadsať ľudí zahynulo na mieste, ranených odviezli do Sklabine a zabili tam, spolu dvadsaťštyri obetí. Berlín mal dôkaz, po akom túžil, že Slovensko sa vymklo spod kontroly, a 29. augusta prekročili nemecké vojská hranicu — v deň, keď sa začalo Slovenské národné povstanie.
