Martin appears in writing for the first time in 1284, as villa sancti Martini in a donation of King Ladislaus IV — that is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived. The first direct mention of the place itself is a charter of 1315 issued by the magnate Donč for the parish of St Martin's church. On 3 October 1340 King Charles Robert raised Martin to the rank of a town, which was worth having because it stood on the road towards Kremnica and the Nitra country. Smiths are named here in 1384, and shoemakers, locksmiths and potters later formed guilds of their own — the trades of a place where travellers stop rather than a place that produces much.Prvý raz sa Martin spomína v roku 1284 ako villa sancti Martini v donácii kráľa Ladislava IV. — to je však údaj o listine, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žijú. Priamo o obci hovorí až listina magistra Donča z roku 1315, vydaná pre farnosť Kostola svätého Martina. 3. októbra 1340 povýšil kráľ Karol Róbert Martin na mesto, čo malo cenu preto, že ležal na ceste smerom na Kremnicu a do Ponitria. Kováči sa tu spomínajú v roku 1384, neskôr si cechy zakladajú aj obuvníci, zámočníci a hrnčiari — remeslá miesta, kde sa zastavujú cestujúci, nie miesta, ktoré veľa vyrába.
