The Velvet Revolution of November 1989 ended communist rule, and the state enterprises that the whole country worked for had to find owners and customers in an open market. Most Slovak works of this vintage shrank or closed. This one did the opposite: it was privatised and taken into the German Schaeffler group, trading first as INA Kysuce, and it kept growing. In the territorial reform of 1996 the district of Kysucké Nové Mesto was re-established, in a smaller shape than in 1923, so the town got its offices back after thirty-six years. Both halves of that are unusual, and together they are why this town did not go the way of most one-factory towns in the 1990s.Nežná revolúcia v novembri 1989 ukončila vládu komunistickej strany a štátne podniky, pre ktoré pracovala celá krajina, si museli na otvorenom trhu nájsť majiteľov aj odberateľov.
