The Košice–Bohumín railway opened through the town in 1871, putting it fifteen minutes from Žilina and on a through route from Silesia to the east of the kingdom. It should have been the making of the place. Instead the second half of the century took people away: this was the height of the emigration to America, when roughly 500,000 Slovaks crossed the Atlantic between 1880 and the mid-1920s, more than half of them to Pennsylvania. Then in August 1904 a fire went through Kysucké Nové Mesto and left just thirty houses standing. A town that has to rebuild itself from thirty houses does not build monuments; it builds houses, which is a large part of why the centre here looks the age it does.V roku 1871 sa mestom otvorila Košicko-bohumínska železnica, ktorá ho posunula na štvrťhodinu od Žiliny a na tranzitnú trasu zo Sliezska na východ kráľovstva. Malo to byť jeho šťastie. Namiesto toho druhá polovica storočia ľudí odviedla: bol to vrchol vysťahovalectva do Ameriky, keď medzi rokom 1880 a polovicou dvadsiatych rokov prešlo Atlantik približne 500 000 Slovákov, viac než polovica z nich do Pensylvánie.
