On 2 June 1918, after nearly four years of war, Slovak soldiers stationed at Kragujevac in Serbia refused to be sent back to the front and mutinied. The revolt was crushed at once and men were court-martialled and shot. Eight of them came from Kysucké Nové Mesto: eight families in one small town who lost a son not to an enemy but to their own army. It is the local reason why 1918 in this valley was not felt as the loss of an empire but as the end of something people had stopped believing in. The republic that replaced it was five months away.
