Two castles guarded one gorge, and this is the one that lost. Starhrad — the Old Castle, in older documents the castle of Varín — went up on a wooded spur above the left bank of the Váh in the thirteenth century, a generation or more before Strečno appeared on the rock opposite. Nobody stormed it and nobody blew it up. Its owners simply built themselves something more comfortable down in the valley and walked away, and the forest closed over the walls. Nikto ho nedobyl a nikto ho nevyhodil do vzduchu.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Starhrad was built to watch the old trade road up the Váh valley, and it was built early: historians put the work before 1235, in the reign of Andrew II, and the document usually cited as the first to name it is a charter of King Béla IV dated 1241, although not every account agrees on that date. Handle that year carefully. 1241 is when the Mongols crossed the Carpathians and destroyed the royal army, and it has become a magnet for castle stories all over Slovakia — but nothing in the record says the Mongols took this castle. What the invasion really did was convince Béla IV that the kingdom had to be rebuilt in stone, and the great wave of Slovak hill castles comes after it. Starhrad was one of the few that was already standing.
In the early fourteenth century the castle fell to Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who ran the north-west of the kingdom as though it were his own country. After his power collapsed it was held in 1323 by Donč, the king's ispán — the royal officer in charge of a county — and then it went to the crown itself. A royal captain sat here with a garrison, and living quarters and farm buildings were put up inside the walls to keep them fed. The job never changed: watch the road, and take the toll from whoever used it.Začiatkom štrnásteho storočia pripadol hrad Matúšovi Čákovi Trenčianskemu, oligarchovi, ktorý severozápad kráľovstva spravoval, akoby to bola jeho vlastná krajina.
From 1443 Starhrad belonged to the Pongrác family of Liptovský Mikuláš, who held it, on and off, for most of the rest of its working life. They arrived in the middle of a civil war: the kingdom had two claimants to the throne and Czech captains under Ján Jiskra held most of the castles of what is now Slovakia. In a country like that, a castle above a gorge was not a symbol of anything — it was income and insurance. Within a year the same family also held Strečno across the water, and from then on the two castles' fates are one story. Prišli uprostred občianskej vojny: kráľovstvo malo dvoch uchádzačov o trón a české posádky Jána Jiskru držali väčšinu hradov dnešného Slovenska.
In the same century the Pongrác family made the decision that finished Starhrad: they built themselves a Renaissance manor house down in the valley at Krasňany and moved into it. A castle on a spur was cold, cramped, hard to supply and reached only by a climb; a manor on flat ground had large windows, warm rooms and a courtyard a carriage could drive into. Strečno, across the water, was better placed and better built and kept its garrison. Starhrad was left to a caretaker — and a castle with a caretaker instead of a lord is already halfway to being a ruin.V tom istom storočí urobili Pongrácovci rozhodnutie, ktoré Starhrad dorazilo: dolu v doline, v Krasňanoch, si postavili renesančný kaštieľ a presťahovali sa doň.
Between 1529 and 1553 the Pongrác family fought a private war over these estates with Mikuláš Kostka of Sedlec — not a lawsuit, but a feud with real soldiers, sieges and burned villages. It was possible because the kingdom had come apart: after the defeat at Mohács in 1526 Hungary had two rival kings and then a permanent Ottoman frontier across the south, and the crown had no strength left to make northern lords behave. The Ottomans themselves never came anywhere near this gorge. The damage done in the Váh valley in these years was done by its own nobility, which is worth remembering the next time somebody blames the Turks.Medzi rokmi 1529 a 1553 viedli Pongrácovci o tieto majetky súkromnú vojnu s Mikulášom Kostkom zo Sedlca — nešlo o súdny spor, ale o zvadu so skutočnými vojakmi, obliehaniami a vypálenými dedinami.
Caretakers hung on into the early eighteenth century, and then even they went. Nothing dramatic marks the end: no siege, no demolition order from Vienna, no fire that anybody wrote down. The roofs went first, then the floors, then the walls came down in slow pieces every winter, and the beech forest grew up through the courtyard. This is how most castles actually die, and it is worth knowing, because the guidebook version — stormed, burned, blown up — is usually the exciting exception rather than the rule. Takto hrady umierajú v skutočnosti — a je dobré to vedieť, lebo verzia zo sprievodcov, teda dobytý, vypálený, vyhodený do vzduchu, býva skôr efektnou výnimkou než pravidlom.
Below the empty walls the valley went on working. Timber from Orava and Liptov came down the river on rafts steered by pltníci, past the great bend called the Domašínsky meander and into the narrows, which the raftsmen rated the worst water on the Váh. Then in the early 1870s the Košice–Bohumín railway was blasted through the gorge, and freight that had taken days by water took hours by rail. The rafting trade died within two generations. The ruin above it, having nothing left to lose, carried on doing nothing at all. Pltníctvo do dvoch generácií zaniklo. Zrúcanina nad ním už nemala čo stratiť, a tak ďalej nerobila vôbec nič.
The twentieth century arrived at the foot of the hill. When the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, the insurgent defence line ran through the gorge below this hill: from 31 August to 3 September Slovak soldiers, partisans and a French detachment fought a German force for the narrows and lost them on the fourth day. No account of the battle mentions the ruin itself. It stood above the fighting exactly as it had once stood above the toll road.
For most of the twentieth century nobody did anything here at all, which is how Starhrad kept the quality Strečno lost: it is a real ruin, not a rebuilt castle. In 2018 an association was founded to rescue it, and conservation work has been running since 2019 — the slow, unglamorous kind, where a wall is pinned and capped so it survives another winter rather than made to look new. There is no ticket office and no car park at the gate. You walk up through the beech woods from the river, and what waits at the top is broken masonry, the Váh bending away below, and the roof of Strečno visible across the valley: the castle that won.Väčšinu dvadsiateho storočia sa tu nerobilo vôbec nič, a práve preto si Starhrad zachoval to, o čo Strečno prišlo: je to skutočná zrúcanina, nie obnovený hrad.
