Between the Malá Fatra and the ridge opposite, the Váh squeezes through a gorge, and for centuries that was the only practical way through for anything moving between the north-west of the country and the Turiec basin beyond. Starhrad — also called Starý hrad, and in older sources the castle of Varín — is the elder of the pair. It went up in the thirteenth century as a royal castle guarding the route and the toll taken on it, standing on a wooded spur high above the left bank. Then Strečno rose on the rock opposite, and it was better placed, better built and — crucially — a great deal more comfortable to live in. As the two came to share owners in the later Middle Ages, the older castle slid down the list. It was neglected, then left, and by the seventeenth century it stood empty.
