For most of the twentieth century nobody did anything here at all, which is how Starhrad kept the quality Strečno lost: it is a real ruin, not a rebuilt castle. In 2018 an association was founded to rescue it, and conservation work has been running since 2019 — the slow, unglamorous kind, where a wall is pinned and capped so it survives another winter rather than made to look new. There is no ticket office and no car park at the gate. You walk up through the beech woods from the river, and what waits at the top is broken masonry, the Váh bending away below, and the roof of Strečno visible across the valley: the castle that won.Väčšinu dvadsiateho storočia sa tu nerobilo vôbec nič, a práve preto si Starhrad zachoval to, o čo Strečno prišlo: je to skutočná zrúcanina, nie obnovený hrad. Roku 2018 vzniklo združenie na jeho záchranu a od roku 2019 tu prebiehajú konzervačné práce — tie pomalé a nefotogenické, pri ktorých sa múr zopne a zastreší, aby prežil ďalšiu zimu, nie aby vyzeral ako nový. Pri bráne nie je pokladňa ani parkovisko. Vystúpite bučinou od rieky a hore na vás čaká rozlámané murivo, Váh zatáčajúci sa v hĺbke a cez dolinu viditeľná strecha Strečna: hradu, ktorý vyhral.
