History of Lietava CastleDejiny — Lietavský hrad

Lietava is one of the largest castle ruins in Slovakia, strung along a limestone crest above the villages of Lietava and Lietavská Svinná. No army ever took it and no fire brought it down: it was destroyed by inheritance law, which turned one castle into dozens of part-owners who could never agree to mend a roof. Since 1999 volunteers have been carrying stone up the hill and putting the walls back.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. after 1241po roku 1241 Built because of the Mongols, not destroyed by themPostavený pre Mongolov, nie zbúraný nimi

In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal host at Muhi and rode through the kingdom; what burned was mostly wood, because most fortification in the country still was wood. King Béla IV's answer was a programme of stone castles on rock, and Lietava is one of the castles that came out of it — the sources place its building after 1241, on a limestone crest that barely needed a mason's help to be defensible. Nothing here fell to the Mongols for the simple reason that nothing here was standing yet. Slovak accounts credit the work to the Balassa family; whoever laid the first stone, the shape of this place is the shape of the fear that came out of 1241.Na jar roku 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorskú kráľovskú armádu pri Mohi a prehnalo sa kráľovstvom; horelo najmä drevo, lebo väčšina vtedajších opevnení bola drevená. Mongolom tu nepadlo nič, a to z jednoduchého dôvodu: nestálo tu ešte nič. Slovenské pramene pripisujú stavbu Balašovcom; nech už prvý kameň položil ktokoľvek, tvar tohto miesta je tvarom strachu, ktorý zostal po roku 1241.

  2. 1318 – 13211318 – 1321 Matúš Čák, and what a first mention really isMatúš Čák a čo vlastne znamená prvá zmienka

The oldest written mention of Lietava comes from 1318 — worth pausing on, because a first mention is a fact about a surviving document and not about when the walls went up. By then the crest lay inside the reach of Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who for a generation ran most of what is now western Slovakia as though it were his own country, taking notice of the king only when it suited him. He died in 1321 and his lordship fell apart within months; the troops of King Charles I took the castle back and it returned to the Balassas. Seen from the valley the walls still read as an outcrop rather than a building, which is exactly what made the site worth fighting over.

In the late fourteenth century the castle was in the hands of King Sigismund, and after that it changed owners repeatedly, which was normal — a castle was not a home but a piece of property with an income attached, granted, pledged and taken away again. From 1475 to 1494 it belonged to Pavol Kiniži, in Hungarian Kinizsi Pál, the most famous soldier of King Matthias Corvinus and a commander against the Ottomans, and he rebuilt it substantially. This is the period in which a thirteenth-century rock fort grew into the sprawling thing you climb through today: not one enclosure but several, stepping down the crest, each closed by its own gate and its own run of wall.Koncom štrnásteho storočia patril hrad kráľovi Žigmundovi a potom opakovane menil majiteľov, čo bolo bežné — hrad nebol domovom, ale majetkom s príjmom, ktorý sa daroval, zálohoval a zase odoberal. V rokoch 1475 – 1494 ho držal Pavol Kiniži, po maďarsky Kinizsi Pál, najslávnejší vojak kráľa Mateja Korvína a veliteľ v bojoch proti Turkom, a hrad výrazne prestaval.

  4. 1530 – 16041530 – 1604 A garrison of 285, and the family papersPosádka 285 mužov a rodové listiny

After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 this was a kingdom at war, and Lietava was held accordingly: in 1530, under Mikuláš Kostka, there were 285 mercenaries on the hill. In 1556 František Thurzó married Kostka's daughter Barbora, in 1558 he bought the castle for 12,640 gold florins, and the Thurzós fortified a further outer bailey and added Renaissance comfort inside the old walls. Their son Juraj Thurzó, the future palatine of Hungary, was born here on 2 September 1567 — and this, not comfortable Bytča down in the valley, is where the family kept its archive, because charters and deeds were what a noble family's wealth actually consisted of and paper is safest up a rock. By 1604 the garrison was down to twelve men: the danger had moved south and the family had moved downhill.

  5. 1621 – 16411621 – 1641 The sons run out, and the castle gets fifty ownersSynovia sa minuli a hrad má päťdesiat majiteľov

Juraj Thurzó's only son Imrich died in 1621, and with him the male line of the Bytča and Orava branch. The estate was divided among his heirs, and it kept dividing as their children inherited in turn; by 1641 the co-heirs had fallen out over it and Lietava became a kompozesorát, a jointly held estate with a large number of part-owners. A castle with dozens of owners has, in practice, no owner at all: every repair needs everybody to agree and everybody to pay, so no repair ever happens and nobody is responsible for the roof. The male line of the whole Thurzó family ended in 1635 or 1636 with its Spiš branch, depending on which member you count as the last.Jediný syn Juraja Turzu Imrich zomrel roku 1621 a s ním vymrela mužská línia bytčianskej a oravskej vetvy.

  6. 16981698 Nobody lives here, but the papers are still insideNikto tu nebýva, listiny sú však stále vnútri

An inspection of the castle in 1698 recorded that it was uninhabited and that the only thing still kept in it was the archive. That single sentence is the whole story of Lietava's decline in miniature: nobody wanted to live up a rock any more, but nobody was willing to move the documents either, because the documents were the proof of who owned what. So the castle went on being maintained just enough to keep the papers dry, and no more. A building that is looked after only as a strongbox is a building already on its way out.

  7. 1760 – 17701760 – 1770 The archive leaves, and the roof goes with itArchív odchádza a strecha s ním

Between about 1760 and 1770 the archive was moved out of Lietava to Orava Castle, and with it went the last practical reason to keep a roof on anything here. From then on the castle was abandoned to the weather, which in a limestone crest with hard winters is a fast worker: rain gets into the wall core, freezes, and levers the stones apart from the inside. Lietava is a rare thing among Slovak ruins in that no army and no fire ever defeated it. It was destroyed by inheritance law, and then by frost. Zničilo ju dedičské právo a potom mráz.

  8. 1870 – 18731870 – 1873 The same baron who bought BytčaTen istý barón, čo kúpil Bytču

Between 1870 and 1873 the Lietava properties were bought by Baron Popper — the head of the same timber and merchant family that had bought the château at Bytča in 1862. By then there was nothing here to buy but land and a romantic ruin, and that is how the nineteenth century liked its castles: as scenery. Nobody in that century proposed rebuilding Lietava, and given the size of the place, nobody sensible would have. The importance of the purchase is only that it links the two halves of the old Thurzó arrangement one last time, under one owner.V rokoch 1870 – 1873 kúpil lietavské majetky barón Popper — hlava tej istej drevárskej a obchodníckej rodiny, ktorá roku 1862 kúpila zámok v Bytči.

  9. 1999 – today1999 – dnes The volunteers who would not let it fallDobrovoľníci, ktorí ho nenechali spadnúť

In 1999 a group of people who were tired of watching Lietava come apart founded the Združenie na záchranu Lietavského hradu, the Association for the Rescue of Lietava Castle, and from 2003 conservation work has run on the hill every summer. Unpaid volunteers working with a few skilled masons stabilise leaning walls, rebuild collapsed vaults, cap the tops of the masonry so frost and rainwater stop prising the core apart, and clear rubble by hand. Everything has to be carried up — stone, sand, lime, water, tools and the volunteers themselves — because there is no road to the top and there never will be. There is no completion date, because completion is not the aim: a ruin this size will never be a roofed castle again, and the work is consolidation, stopping the loss and handing the thing on in better shape than it was received. It took an inheritance to lose this castle; it takes volunteers, one summer at a time, to keep it.Roku 1999 založila skupina ľudí, ktorých už unavovalo pozerať sa, ako sa Lietava rozpadáva, Združenie na záchranu Lietavského hradu a od roku 2003 sa na kopci každé leto pracuje. Neplatení dobrovoľníci spolu s niekoľkými skúsenými murármi staticky zabezpečujú vychýlené múry, obnovujú zrútené klenby, zakonzervúvajú koruny muriva, aby mráz a dažďová voda prestali rozoberať jadro, a ručne odpratávajú sutinu.
