In the late fourteenth century the castle was in the hands of King Sigismund, and after that it changed owners repeatedly, which was normal — a castle was not a home but a piece of property with an income attached, granted, pledged and taken away again. From 1475 to 1494 it belonged to Pavol Kiniži, in Hungarian Kinizsi Pál, the most famous soldier of King Matthias Corvinus and a commander against the Ottomans, and he rebuilt it substantially. This is the period in which a thirteenth-century rock fort grew into the sprawling thing you climb through today: not one enclosure but several, stepping down the crest, each closed by its own gate and its own run of wall.Koncom štrnásteho storočia patril hrad kráľovi Žigmundovi a potom opakovane menil majiteľov, čo bolo bežné — hrad nebol domovom, ale majetkom s príjmom, ktorý sa daroval, zálohoval a zase odoberal. V rokoch 1475 – 1494 ho držal Pavol Kiniži, po maďarsky Kinizsi Pál, najslávnejší vojak kráľa Mateja Korvína a veliteľ v bojoch proti Turkom, a hrad výrazne prestaval. Práve v tomto období vyrástla z pevnôstky na skale z trinásteho storočia tá rozľahlá stavba, ktorou dnes stúpate hore: nie jedno opevnenie, ale niekoľko, schodmi po hrebeni, každé uzavreté vlastnou bránou a vlastným úsekom hradieb.
