Lietava first enters the record around the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, on a limestone crest that needed very little help from masons to be defensible. In the early fourteenth century the castle lay within the sphere of Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who for a generation ruled much of what is now western Slovakia more or less as his own country, king or no king. Seen from the valley the walls still read as an outcrop rather than a building — which is exactly what made the site worth taking in the first place.Lietava vstupuje do písomných prameňov na prelome trinásteho a štrnásteho storočia, na vápencovom hrebeni, ktorý na obranu takmer nepotreboval pomoc murárov. Začiatkom štrnásteho storočia patril hrad do sféry Matúša Čáka Trenčianskeho — oligarchu, ktorý celú jednu generáciu vládol veľkej časti dnešného západného Slovenska prakticky ako vlastnej krajine, s kráľom či bez neho. Z údolia pôsobia hradby dodnes skôr ako skalné bralo než ako stavba — a práve preto sa toto miesto oplatilo obsadiť.
Its great age came with the Thurzó family — the Turzovci — who rose through the central-European copper trade in partnership with the Augsburg banking house of the Fuggers, and who turned mining money into land, titles and offices. The family produced Juraj Thurzó, Palatine of Hungary — the highest office in the kingdom below the crown itself — whose principal residence was the elegant Renaissance manor down in Bytča. Lietava was the other half of that arrangement: not the comfortable house but the strong one, and it was here, up in the rock, that the Thurzós kept the family archive.Veľkú éru priniesol hradu rod Thurzovcov, ktorý zbohatol na stredoeurópskom obchode s meďou v spojení s augsburským bankovým domom Fuggerovcov a peniaze z baníctva premenil na pôdu, tituly a úrady. Z rodu vzišiel Juraj Thurzo, uhorský palatín — najvyšší úrad v krajine hneď po korune —, ktorého hlavným sídlom bol elegantný renesančný zámok dole v Bytči. Lietava bola druhou polovicou tejto dvojice: nie pohodlný dom, ale pevný, a práve tu, hore v skale, uchovávali Thurzovci rodový archív.
Then the family ran out of sons. When the male Thurzó line died out in the 1630s the estate was divided among a large number of co-heirs, and it kept dividing as their children inherited in turn. A castle with dozens of part-owners has, in practice, no owner at all: every repair needs everyone to agree and to pay, so no repair ever happens. Nobody was responsible for the roof. The building was simply used less and less, and in the course of the eighteenth century it was abandoned altogether and left open to the weather. Lietava is a rare thing among Slovak ruins — a castle that no army and no fire ever defeated.Potom rodu došli synovia. Keď v tridsiatych rokoch sedemnásteho storočia vymrela mužská línia Thurzovcov, panstvo sa rozdelilo medzi veľký počet spoludedičov — a delilo sa ďalej, ako dedili ich deti. Hrad s desiatkami spolumajiteľov nemá v skutočnosti majiteľa nijakého: na každú opravu musia všetci prikývnuť a všetci prispieť, takže sa neurobí žiadna. O strechu sa nemal kto starať. Hrad sa využíval čoraz menej a v priebehu osemnásteho storočia ho opustili úplne a nechali napospas počasiu. Lietava je medzi slovenskými zrúcaninami vzácnym prípadom — hradom, ktorý neporazilo nijaké vojsko ani požiar.
