You go up on foot; there is no other way. A marked trail leaves from Lietava, another from Lietavská Svinná-Babkov, and both are a steady uphill walk of well under an hour through beech and oak wood. The ruin plays hide-and-seek on the way: a stretch of pale wall through the branches, then nothing for ten minutes, then suddenly the whole crest above you at an angle that makes the walls look far taller than they are. The last stretch is rock and root underfoot, and then you are at the outer gate.Hore sa ide pešo; inak sa to nedá. Inside, the castle is a long climb rather than a courtyard. Gates and lower baileys step up the ridge one behind another, each with its own walls, so that you keep arriving somewhere and finding there is more above. There are long stretches of curtain wall, cisterns cut into the rock to hold the rainwater that a crest like this cannot otherwise supply, and the shell of a chapel. At the top sits the upper castle: the palace, roofless, its window openings framing sky, and beside it the tall keep. From up there the Súľov hills fold away in every direction and the two villages lie small and neat below — and there is nothing at all between you and the weather, which is precisely the problem the volunteers have been working on for a quarter of a century.Vnútri je hrad skôr dlhým výstupom než nádvorím.
