In 1999 a group of people who were tired of watching Lietava come apart founded the Združenie na záchranu Lietavského hradu, the Association for the Rescue of Lietava Castle, and from 2003 conservation work has run on the hill every summer. Unpaid volunteers working with a few skilled masons stabilise leaning walls, rebuild collapsed vaults, cap the tops of the masonry so frost and rainwater stop prising the core apart, and clear rubble by hand. Everything has to be carried up — stone, sand, lime, water, tools and the volunteers themselves — because there is no road to the top and there never will be. There is no completion date, because completion is not the aim: a ruin this size will never be a roofed castle again, and the work is consolidation, stopping the loss and handing the thing on in better shape than it was received. It took an inheritance to lose this castle; it takes volunteers, one summer at a time, to keep it.Roku 1999 založila skupina ľudí, ktorých už unavovalo pozerať sa, ako sa Lietava rozpadáva, Združenie na záchranu Lietavského hradu a od roku 2003 sa na kopci každé leto pracuje. Neplatení dobrovoľníci spolu s niekoľkými skúsenými murármi staticky zabezpečujú vychýlené múry, obnovujú zrútené klenby, zakonzervúvajú koruny muriva, aby mráz a dažďová voda prestali rozoberať jadro, a ručne odpratávajú sutinu. Všetko treba vyniesť hore — kameň, piesok, vápno, vodu, náradie aj samých seba —, lebo na vrchol nevedie cesta a ani viesť nebude. Termín dokončenia neexistuje, lebo o dokončenie nejde: zrúcanina tejto veľkosti už nikdy nebude hradom so strechou a zmyslom práce je konzervácia — zastaviť stratu a odovzdať hrad ďalej v lepšom stave, než v akom sa prevzal. Na to, aby sa tento hrad stratil, stačilo dedičstvo. Na to, aby zostal, treba dobrovoľníkov, leto za letom.
