In the late 1990s a group of people who were tired of watching Lietava come apart did something about it. In 1999 they founded the Združenie na záchranu Lietavského hradu — the Association for the Rescue of Lietava Castle — and began running volunteer work camps on the hill every summer. They have not stopped since. It is one of the longest-running civic conservation efforts in the country, and it is the single most important thing that has happened to this castle in three hundred years.Koncom deväťdesiatych rokov skupina ľudí, ktorých už unavovalo pozerať sa, ako sa Lietava rozpadáva, s tým niečo urobila. The work is exactly as unglamorous as it sounds. Unpaid volunteers alongside a handful of skilled masons have spent more than two decades stabilising walls that were leaning, rebuilding collapsed vaults, capping masonry so that frost and rainwater stop prising the core apart, and clearing rubble by hand — bucket by bucket, barrow by barrow. Everything has to be carried up: stone, sand, lime, tools, water, the volunteers themselves. There is no road to the top and there never will be.Tá práca je presne taká neefektná, ako znie. There is no completion date, because completion is not the point. A ruin this size will never be a roofed castle again, and nobody is trying to make it one: the aim is consolidation — to stop the loss, secure what stands, and hand the thing on in better shape than it was received. Season after season, the same walls that were falling are now the walls that are being held up. That is why Lietava is still there to visit.Termín dokončenia neexistuje, lebo o dokončenie nejde. Zrúcanina tejto veľkosti už nikdy nebude hradom so strechou a nikto sa o to ani nepokúša: cieľom je konzervácia — zastaviť stratu, zabezpečiť to, čo stojí, a odovzdať to ďalej v lepšom stave, než v akom sa to prevzalo. Sezónu za sezónou sú tie isté múry, ktoré padali, dnes múrmi, ktoré niekto drží. Práve preto tu Lietava stále je a dá sa navštíviť.
It took an inheritance to lose this castle. It takes volunteers, one summer at a time, to keep it.Na to, aby sa tento hrad stratil, stačilo dedičstvo. Na to, aby zostal, treba dobrovoľníkov — leto za letom.
