Móric Beňovský was born at Vrbové in 1746 into the local nobility, and his life is the strangest thing this town has produced. He fought with the Bar Confederation in Poland, was captured by the Russians and exiled to Kamchatka at the far end of Siberia, seized a ship there and sailed it as far as Macao, reached France, and was sent to Madagascar, where local chiefs recognised him as a ruler and where French troops killed him in 1786. The memoirs he left made him famous across Europe, and historians have been arguing with them ever since, because in most of it he is the only source about himself. The kúria at the corner of the square that a plaque of 1908 calls his birthplace now holds the town library and a small exhibition; that identification rests on nineteenth-century tradition rather than on a document, which makes the house more interesting, not less.
