The Zobor charter of 1113 — the property list of the Benedictine abbey above Nitra, and the first written trace of dozens of places in western Slovakia — mentions a settlement that some historians read as an early Vrbové, under the name Počkovec. That identification is not certain, and it is worth knowing why: medieval scribes spelled by ear, place names moved and changed, and matching a name in a charter to a village on the ground is often an argument rather than a fact. What is not in doubt is that people were already living on this ground.
