The First World War brought the town something no charter had prepared it for. One of the largest prisoner-of-war camps in Hungary was built here, able to hold as many as twenty thousand men, most of them Serbian soldiers. A camp of that size was a town in itself, bigger than Nagymegyer, with its own barracks, kitchens and hospital, set down in the fields beside a place of about four thousand inhabitants. Camps like this were where the epidemics of the war years did their worst work. In sheer numbers of people it is the largest thing that has ever happened here.Prvá svetová vojna priniesla mestu čosi, na čo ho nepripravila nijaká listina. Postavili tu jeden z najväčších zajateckých táborov v Uhorsku, s kapacitou až dvadsaťtisíc mužov, väčšinou srbských vojakov. Tábor takej veľkosti bol mestom sám osebe — väčším než vtedajší Nagymegyer — s vlastnými barakmi, kuchyňami a nemocnicou, položeným do polí vedľa obce so štyrmi tisíckami obyvateľov. Práve v takýchto táboroch si vojnové epidémie vyberali najkrutejšiu daň. Čo do počtu ľudí je to najväčšia vec, aká sa tu kedy stala.
