In 1421 the estate passed to the Kanizsay family, and the villagers passed with it. Then, on 15 December 1466, King Matthias Corvinus granted Nagymegyer the standing of a market town: three annual fairs, the right to govern itself, and what the charters call the right of the sword — the power to try and hang criminals instead of sending them to a lord's court. For a lowland farming settlement that was an enormous step up. The parish church, first built around 1460, belongs to the same confident generation.V roku 1421 prešlo panstvo na rod Kanizsayovcov a dedinčania s ním.
