Galanta sits on open lowland with no hill, no stone and no castle — and that, more than anything, is its history. What it had instead was a road: the highway between Ottoman-held Buda and the Habsburg capital at Pressburg ran straight through it, bringing traffic, fairs and armies in roughly equal measure. A family of local nobles took the village's name, rose to be one of the greatest houses in the kingdom, and left two manor houses behind. Later a stationmaster's small son grew up beside the tracks here and turned the town's band music into a piece the world still plays.Galanta leží na otvorenej rovine — bez kopca, bez kameňa a bez hradu. A práve to je jej dejinami viac než čokoľvek iné. Namiesto toho mala cestu: viedla tadiaľ hradská z tureckého Budína do habsburského Prešporka a prinášala obchod, jarmoky aj vojská zhruba rovnakým dielom. Rod domácich zemanov si vzal meno dediny, vypracoval sa medzi najväčšie rody kráľovstva a zanechal tu dva kaštiele. Neskôr tu pri koľajniciach vyrástol malý syn prednostu stanice a z hudby tunajších kapiel spravil skladbu, ktorú svet hráva dodnes.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Galanta appears in writing for the first time in 1237, in a charter of King Béla IV listing property of the abbey of Pannonhalma. Four years later the Mongol army destroyed the royal army at Mohi, on 11 April 1241, and spread across the plain; in the winter that followed it crossed the frozen Danube. On the open lowland there was nothing to shelter behind — no hill, no stone, no walls. Béla IV's answer was to cover Hungary in stone castles, which is why so many Slovak castles date from the decades after 1241 rather than before it. None of them was built here: you cannot put a castle on flat mud.
There was no castle to rule this country from, so it was ruled from manor houses and from the county seat. In 1421 the Galanta estate came into the hands of the family afterwards known as the Esterházys of Galánta: they took their predicate, the of in their title, from this small market village. Over the next three centuries that family gave the kingdom two palatines — the highest officers under the king — and held estates stretching across Hungary into Austria. The village stayed a village. It was the name that travelled. Dedina zostala dedinou. Putovalo meno.
After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom broke into three, and in 1536 what was left of royal Hungary moved its capital to Pressburg, today's Bratislava. Galanta suddenly sat on the road between Turkish-held Buda and the new capital, which is the worst possible address in a long war; local accounts say Turkish raiding stopped the town's growth for a century. The Esterházys built anyway. A Renaissance manor house went up around 1600 under Ferenc Esterházy, and a second house in 1633 under his sons Dániel and Pál. The town was granted the standing of a free market town in 1613 or 1614, and in 1635 Ferdinand II confirmed four annual fairs and a weekly market — in effect, a licence to make money from the road.
The eighteenth century was quiet, and quiet is exactly what a market town needs. Crafts organised themselves into guilds — associations that set prices, trained apprentices and kept outsiders out — and the fairs grew. In 1736 the Esterházys rebuilt their house of 1633 in the baroque taste of the day. Underneath all of it the serf system was still in force: almost everyone in the surrounding villages worked land they did not own and owed unpaid labour to a lord. It would take another hundred years to end that.
The revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom in Hungary, and the villagers around Galanta became owners of the strips they had worked for a lord. Two years later the railway from Bratislava to Pest was opened through the town, and it changed everything the old road had once decided. Galanta became a junction: grain, goods and people moved through it at a speed nobody in 1800 could have imagined. In 1860 József Esterházy had the family's older house rebuilt yet again, this time in the neo-Gothic fashion — turrets, pointed windows, a medieval look laid over a seventeenth-century body. That is the building people photograph today. O dva roky neskôr otvorili cez mesto železnicu z Bratislavy do Pešti a tá zmenila všetko, o čom kedysi rozhodovala stará cesta.
Under Austria-Hungary Galanta filled up with the machinery of a small district town: offices, a currency exchange in 1864, a savings bank in 1873, street lighting. Cholera swept through in 1873, and the town put up four plague columns in thanks for surviving it; three of them still stand. From 1885 the stationmaster's small son, Zoltán Kodály, listened to the town's bands from the platform. In 1933 he turned what he remembered into Dances of Galánta, and the name of this town has been read off concert programmes ever since. V roku 1873 tadiaľ prešla cholera a mesto dalo z vďaky za prežitie postaviť štyri morové stĺpy; tri z nich stoja dodnes. A od roku 1885 počúval z nástupišťa tunajšie kapely malý syn prednostu stanice, Zoltán Kodály. V roku 1933 z toho, čo si zapamätal, spravil Galantské tance — a meno tohto mesta odvtedy znie z koncertných programov po celom svete.
In 1918 Austria-Hungary collapsed and Galanta found itself in Czechoslovakia, a state whose official languages were Czech and Slovak. Nobody in the town had moved; the border had. The Treaty of Trianon confirmed it in 1920. A land reform broke up the great estates and settled Czech and Slovak farmers on the lowland, which the Hungarian-speaking majority experienced as loss rather than reform. Twenty years of that resentment is the reason the events of 1938 were greeted here the way they were.V roku 1918 sa Rakúsko-Uhorsko rozpadlo a Galanta sa ocitla v Československu, v štáte, ktorého úradnými jazykmi boli čeština a slovenčina. Nikto v meste sa nepohol; pohla sa hranica. Trianonská zmluva to v roku 1920 potvrdila.
The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 handed southern Slovakia, Galanta included, back to Hungary, and Hungarian troops marched in that same month. Galanta stayed under Hungarian administration until Germany occupied Hungary on 19 March 1944. The Slovak National Uprising of August 1944 was fought in the mountains of central Slovakia and never reached this lowland. The war came here instead as a front line, and Soviet troops took Galanta on 31 March 1945.Prvá viedenská arbitráž z 2. novembra 1938 vrátila južné Slovensko aj s Galantou Maďarsku a maďarské vojsko vstúpilo do mesta ešte v tom istom mesiaci. Galanta zostala pod maďarskou správou až do 19. marca 1944, keď Nemecko obsadilo Maďarsko.
The communists took power in February 1948, and within a few years the private strips won in 1848 had been merged into state and co-operative farms. Galanta spent the next forty years as a district town of the socialist lowland: a farming centre with a bus station, a house of culture and a plan handed down from Bratislava.Vo februári 1948 prevzali moc komunisti a o pár rokov zlúčili do štátnych majetkov a družstiev presne tie pásiky pôdy, ktoré sedliaci vybojovali v roku 1848.
The Velvet Revolution of November 1989 ended communist rule without a shot being fired. In Galanta it also stopped something very concrete: the restoration of the Esterházy manor, begun in the 1980s, was broken off when the state paying for it ceased to exist, and the building waited years for a new owner and a new budget.
Slovakia became independent on 1 January 1993, and in the redrawing of districts in 1996 Galanta kept its own and was placed in the Trnava region. In 2002 Samsung opened a television and display plant in the industrial zone, which for a while made this small lowland town one of the country's biggest exporters; the plant has since shrunk, and engineering, plastics, food processing and warehousing now carry more of the work. The hot water that lies under the whole southern lowland was tapped for a thermal park on the edge of town. The family that carried this town's name across Europe is remembered by two manor houses standing a few streets apart.
