In the ninth century the island belonged to the Principality of Nitra and then to Great Moravia, the first state the Slavs of this region built for themselves. Nothing from that century has yet been dug up inside Dunajská Streda itself, so the honest way to put it is this: we know which state the island was in, and we do not know what stood on this particular spot. That is normal for the period — writing was rare, and what survives from a place like this is graves and postholes, not documents. Moravian rule ended in 907, when Hungarian horsemen destroyed a Bavarian army near Bratislava; the island changed masters without, so far as anyone can tell, changing farmers.V 9. storočí patril ostrov Nitrianskemu kniežatstvu a potom Veľkej Morave — prvému štátu, ktorý si Slovania v tomto priestore vybudovali sami.
