November 1989 reached Dunajská Streda as it reached every town in the country. The market came back in the literal sense: private trade was legal again and the shops on the main street stopped belonging to the state. The same years opened the island's other great argument to the public. In 1989 Hungary walked away from its half of the Gabčíkovo–Nagymaros dam scheme, and what had been settled between two governments in 1977 became a matter of protests, expert reports and international law — and it has never entirely closed since.November 1989 prišiel do Dunajskej Stredy tak ako do každého mesta v krajine. Vrátil sa trh v doslovnom zmysle: súkromné podnikanie bolo znova legálne a obchody na hlavnej ulici prestali patriť štátu. Tie isté roky otvorili verejnosti druhý veľký spor ostrova. Maďarsko roku 1989 odstúpilo od svojej polovice sústavy Gabčíkovo – Nagymaros a z toho, čo si dve vlády dohodli roku 1977, sa stala vec protestov, odborných posudkov a medzinárodného práva — a doteraz sa celkom neuzavrela.
