On 11 April 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Muhi, and over the following winter Mongol columns crossed the frozen Danube and burned their way through the country beyond it. No chronicle says what happened on the Žitný ostrov, and nobody should pretend otherwise. What we do know is that the first document naming this place comes immediately afterwards — a report the Bratislava chapter sent to King Béla IV, dated 1254 in some accounts and 1256 in others, in which the name appears as Syridahel. Across Slovakia the years after 1241 are the great age of castle building, but not here: there is no rock on the island to build on, and this town's answer to a dangerous world was always a market rather than a wall.11. apríla 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko pri Muhi uhorskú kráľovskú armádu a nasledujúcu zimu prešli mongolské oddiely po zamrznutom Dunaji a vypálili aj krajinu za ním.
