The seventeenth century squeezed Protestants across the whole kingdom, and Stará Turá lost its church in the re-Catholicisation: the building was taken from the Lutheran congregation that had used it. The Roman Catholic church of the Assumption standing there now was built in 1748 at the initiative of the local landlord Juraj Erdödy, on the site the Lutherans had lost. Most of the town stayed Lutheran all the same, which is the ordinary Slovak pattern — a confiscated building did not change what people believed, only where they could gather.Sedemnáste storočie tlačilo protestantov v celom kráľovstve a Stará Turá prišla počas rekatolizácie o kostol: budovu vzali evanjelickému zboru, ktorý ju používal. Rímskokatolícky kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, ktorý tam stojí dnes, postavili v roku 1748 z podnetu miestneho zemepána Juraja Erdödyho na mieste, o ktoré evanjelici prišli. Mesto však zostalo prevažne evanjelické, čo je na Slovensku bežný obraz — zabraná budova nezmenila to, čomu ľudia verili, iba to, kde sa mohli schádzať.
