Slav settlement in this part of the Váh valley goes back to the seventh and eighth centuries, and it spread further in the ninth, when Great Moravia — the first state to govern this country — held the whole region. The town’s own history says people came down off the fortified hilltops and settled the valley floor around 1100, once the hillforts had gone out of use. That is a reconstruction rather than a document, and it should be read as one.
