Púchov lies on the Váh between Ilava and Považská Bystrica, at the mouth of the Púchovská dolina — a long valley running west into the White Carpathians towards the Czech border. The Javorníky rise to the north-east, and the Nosice dam at the town's northern edge holds back a long reservoir on the river — one step of the Váh cascade, the chain of weirs and hydroelectric stations the river was rebuilt into in the middle of the twentieth century.Púchov leží na Váhu medzi Ilavou a Považskou Bystricou, pri ústí Púchovskej doliny — dlhého údolia, ktoré vedie na západ do Bielych Karpát smerom k českej hranici. Na severovýchode sa dvíhajú Javorníky a Nosická priehrada na severnom okraji mesta zadržiava dlhú vodnú nádrž na rieke. Priehrada je jedným zo stupňov Vážskej kaskády, sústavy hatí a hydroelektrární, na ktorú bola rieka v polovici 20. storočia prestavaná.

It is a junction in the literal sense: the railway to Moravia and Bohemia leaves the main Váh line here, which has mattered to the town's economy for a century.Je to uzol v doslovnom zmysle: práve tu sa z hlavnej považskej trate odpája železnica na Moravu a do Čiech, čo pre hospodárstvo mesta znamená veľa už celé storočie.

The storyHistória

The town's name is attached to a whole period of prehistory. The Púchov culture — an Iron Age and Roman-period culture of the north-western Carpathians — is named after finds made on the hillside above the town in the nineteenth century, and the term is still standard in Central European archaeology.Meno mesta je späté s celým obdobím praveku. Púchovská kultúra — kultúra doby železnej a rímskej v severozápadných Karpatoch — je pomenovaná podľa nálezov, ktoré sa v 19. storočí urobili na svahu nad mestom, a tento pojem je v stredoeurópskej archeológii stále bežný.

Púchov was a market town of the Váh road and became a strongly Lutheran place after the Reformation, keeping that tradition through the counter-reformation centuries. It stayed small until industry arrived.Púchov bol trhovým mestečkom na považskej ceste a po reformácii sa stal výrazne evanjelickým miestom, ktoré si túto tradíciu udržalo aj cez storočia rekatolizácie. Malým zostal až do príchodu priemyslu.

In 1950 tyre production began here, and everything since follows from that: the works grew into the largest industrial site in the region, the town grew around it, and the housing estates on the flat by the river date from the decades when it was expanding.V roku 1950 sa tu začali vyrábať pneumatiky a všetko odvtedy z toho vyplýva: závod vyrástol na najväčší priemyselný areál kraja, mesto rástlo okolo neho a sídliská na rovine pri rieke pochádzajú z desaťročí, keď sa rozširoval.

What to seeČo vidieť

Púchov is a working town rather than a monument town, and the reasons to stop are mostly outside it. The Púchovská dolina runs west for many kilometres through scattered hamlets towards Lazy pod Makytou and the border ridge — good cycling in summer and cross-country skiing in a decent winter. It is also the shortest way from the Váh into the belt of scattered hill settlements that runs the length of the Moravian frontier.Púchov je pracovné mesto, nie mesto pamiatok, a dôvody zastaviť sa ležia väčšinou mimo neho. Púchovská dolina beží na západ mnoho kilometrov cez roztratené osady smerom na Lazy pod Makytou a hraničný hrebeň — v lete dobrá cyklistika, v poriadnej zime bežkovanie. Je to aj najkratšia cesta z Považia do pásu roztratených kopaničiarskych osád, ktorý sa tiahne pozdĺž celého moravského pomedzia.

The Javorníky above the town carry a long ridge trail with wide views into Moravia on one side and along the Váh on the other; the reservoir below the town is used for water sports and fishing.Javorníkmi nad mestom vedie dlhá hrebeňová trasa so širokými výhľadmi na moravskú stranu i pozdĺž Váhu; nádrž pod mestom slúži na vodné športy a rybárčenie.

In town, the riverside and the rebuilt centre are what there is, and the cultural centre keeps a fuller programme than a town this size usually manages.V meste je to nábrežie a prestavané centrum; kultúrny dom pritom drží bohatší program, než aký býva na mesto tejto veľkosti zvykom.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

The tyre plant is the largest industrial works in the Trenčín region. It was registered as Continental Matador Rubber until 2023 and now trades as Continental Tires Slovakia, still making Matador alongside Continental and other group brands. Practically every other business in town has some relation to it.Gumáreň je najväčšou priemyselnou prevádzkou Trenčianskeho kraja. Do roku 2023 bola zapísaná ako Continental Matador Rubber a dnes podniká ako Continental Tires Slovakia; popri Continentale a ďalších značkách skupiny naďalej vyrába aj Matador. Prakticky každý ďalší podnik v meste má na ňu nejakú väzbu.

Food processing is the other local trade — meat and edible oil are both produced here — and engineering suppliers, haulage and services complete the picture.Druhým miestnym odvetvím je potravinárstvo — vyrába sa tu mäso aj jedlý olej — a obraz dopĺňajú strojárski dodávatelia, doprava a služby.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Púchov is on the main Bratislava–Žilina railway, and the branch to Horní Lideč in the Czech Republic — the route towards Vsetín and Prague — leaves from here. The D1 motorway runs alongside the river, and buses serve the Púchovská dolina villages.Púchov leží na hlavnej trati Bratislava – Žilina a odbočuje odtiaľto trať do Horného Lidča v Česku — trasa smerom na Vsetín a Prahu. Popri rieke vedie diaľnica D1 a autobusy obsluhujú obce v Púchovskej doline.
