History of NemšováDejiny — Nemšová

Nemšová stands where the Vlára comes down out of the White Carpathians to meet the Váh — at the mouth of one of the few easy ways through the mountains into Moravia. For seven hundred years it was a village on that road. Then a glassworks arrived and made it a town. Potom prišla sklareň a urobila z nej mesto.

  1. early 11th centuryzačiatok 11. storočia The hermit on the rock at SkalkaPustovník na skale pri Skalke

A few kilometres downstream towards Trenčín, on a rock above the Váh at Skalka, a hermit named Benedict lived in the early eleventh century. He was the pupil of Svorad — Saint Andrew-Svorad, a Benedictine who had come under King Stephen I to the abbey on Zobor hill above Nitra and lived in a cave there. Their lives were written down a generation later by Bishop Maurus, and their cult was confirmed in 1083. A monastery was later built on the rock, and Skalka is counted as the oldest pilgrimage place in Slovakia; the July pilgrimage still fills it. It is why this stretch of the Váh has a religious history older than any building on it.Pár kilometrov po prúde smerom na Trenčín, na skale nad Váhom pri Skalke, žil začiatkom 11. storočia pustovník Beňadik.

  2. 12421242 First written in the year the Mongols leftPrvý zápis v roku, keď Mongoli odtiahli

Nemšová's first written mention is from 1242 — the year the Mongol armies withdrew from the Kingdom of Hungary, leaving behind a country that had to be rebuilt and re-counted. That is very often when Slovak villages first appear on parchment, because that is when kings and bishops were taking stock of what they still had. As always, the date belongs to the document and not to the settlement: people were farming this flat land by the river long before 1242.Prvá písomná zmienka o Nemšovej je z roku 1242 — z roku, keď mongolské vojská odtiahli z Uhorska a nechali za sebou krajinu, ktorú bolo treba znova postaviť a znova spočítať.

  3. end of the 15th centurykoniec 15. storočia Shepherds on the ridgePastieri na hrebeni

Trenčianska Závada, high above the valley and today one of the four parts of Nemšová, was founded at the end of the fifteenth century during the Wallachian colonisation — the slow movement of shepherding communities westward along the Carpathian ridges, settling high ground nobody had ploughed. They came with sheep, with their own customary law, and with a way of using mountains that the lowland villages did not have. The ridge settlements of the White Carpathians and the Strážov Hills are largely their doing, and that is why a town on the river also owns a village at 320 metres.Trenčianska Závada, vysoko nad dolinou a dnes jedna zo štyroch častí Nemšovej, vznikla koncom 15. storočia počas valaskej kolonizácie — pomalého postupu pastierskych rodov na západ po karpatských hrebeňoch, ktorí osídľovali výšiny, kde nikto neoral. Prichádzali s ovcami, s vlastným zvykovým právom a so spôsobom, ako využiť hory, aký dedinám v doline chýbal.

  4. 16881688 A village with its own sealDedina s vlastnou pečaťou

The oldest known seal of Nemšová is dated 1688 and reads PAGVS NEM SOVA — the village of Nemšová. In the middle of it stands St Michael the Archangel in the dress of a Roman soldier, a sword in his right hand and a pair of scales in his left, weighing souls. A seal mattered: it meant the village could authenticate its own documents, and the picture on it was the community's identity, chosen and kept. Nemšová still uses that figure — St Michael with sword and scales is on the town's coat of arms today.Najstaršia známa pečať Nemšovej je z roku 1688 a znie PAGVS NEM SOVA — dedina Nemšová. V jej strede stojí svätý Michal archanjel v odeve rímskeho vojaka, v pravici s mečom a v ľavici s váhami, na ktorých váži duše.

  5. 17661766 The church of St MichaelKostol svätého Michala

The parish church of St Michael the Archangel was built in 1766, in the decades when the Habsburg monarchy was rebuilding parishes and schools across the country after the last of the uprisings. It is the oldest building in the town, and it fixed in stone the patron the village had already been putting on its seal for eighty years. Around it Nemšová stayed exactly what it was: a farming village on the road along the Váh, with carts climbing the Vlára pass to Moravia above it.Farský Kostol svätého Michala archanjela postavili roku 1766, v desaťročiach, keď habsburská monarchia po posledných povstaniach obnovovala po celej krajine fary a školy.

  6. 28 October 188828. októbra 1888 The railway through the passŽeleznica cez priesmyk

On 28 October 1888 the railway through the Vlára pass was opened between Uherský Brod and Trenčianska Teplá, with a station at Nemšová. At that moment it was one of only three rail links between the Kingdom of Hungary and Moravia; the other two ran at Bratislava and at Žilina. A route people had walked and carted through for centuries suddenly moved goods by the wagonload, and a village at the mouth of the valley became a place with a station on it. A branch line to Lednické Rovne later left the route here as well.28. októbra 1888 otvorili železnicu cez Vlársky priesmyk v úseku Uherský Brod – Trenčianska Teplá a Nemšová dostala stanicu. V tej chvíli to bolo jedno z troch železničných prepojení Uhorska s Moravou; ďalšie dve viedli cez Bratislavu a cez Žilinu.

  7. 1918–19381918 – 1938 The border that disappearedHranica, ktorá zmizla

When Czechoslovakia was founded in 1918 the Vlára pass stopped being an international frontier. A railway built to join two halves of one empire now ran inside one state, from Moravia into Slovakia with no customs post on it, and the villages on both sides of the White Carpathians — who had always spoken close dialects and traded across the ridge — were in the same country for the first time. That is the quiet, practical side of 1918, the side that gets lost behind the flags and the speeches.

  8. 1939–19451939 – 1945 The pass becomes a border againPriesmyk je znova hranicou

In March 1939 Czechoslovakia was destroyed, and the Vlára pass became a state border again — this time between the Slovak State and German-occupied Bohemia and Moravia. Nemšová was a village of the Trenčín district and shared the district's war. After the Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944, German troops occupied Trenčín; after the war seven mass graves holding 69 murdered members of the resistance were found on the Brezina hill above that town. Partisan groups worked the White Carpathian ridge above the Vlára. Romanian and Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front took Trenčín on 10 April 1945, and the places upstream in the days that followed.V marci 1939 Československo zaniklo a Vlársky priesmyk sa znova stal štátnou hranicou — tentoraz medzi Slovenským štátom a nemeckým Protektorátom Čechy a Morava. Rumunské a sovietske vojská 2. ukrajinského frontu obsadili Trenčín 10. apríla 1945 a miesta proti prúdu v nasledujúcich dňoch.

  9. 1949–19761949 – 1976 A glass furnace that never goes outSklárska pec, ktorá nikdy nezhasne

The chapel of Our Lady of Fatima was built at Trenčianska Závada in 1949, the year the communist state opened its campaign against the churches; it is a pilgrimage chapel still, with services each May and October. Down in the valley the state built the thing that changed Nemšová permanently: a glassworks making bottles and jars, which became the largest employer for miles and pulled people off the land into shift work. Glass is made day and night because a furnace cannot be switched off. In 1976 Nemšová was merged with Ľuborča, Kľúčové and Trenčianska Závada into a single municipality, which is why those places are boroughs today rather than villages.Kaplnku Fatimskej Panny Márie postavili v Trenčianskej Závade roku 1949, v roku, keď komunistický štát spustil kampaň proti cirkvám; dodnes je pútnickým miestom s májovou a októbrovou slávnostnou omšou. Roku 1976 zlúčili Nemšovú s Ľuborčou, Kľúčovým a Trenčianskou Závadou do jednej obce, a preto sú tie miesta dnes mestskými časťami, nie dedinami.

  10. 1 January 19891. januára 1989 A village becomes a townZ dediny sa stáva mesto

Nemšová became a town on 1 January 1989, by a government resolution taken on 30 November 1988 — about eleven months before the Velvet Revolution swept that government away. In socialist Czechoslovakia raising a village to a town was an administrative decision, not a charter from a king, but the reasoning was much the same as in the Middle Ages: enough people, enough work, enough services to be more than a village. The 1976 merger of the four settlements is what had made the numbers add up.Nemšová sa stala mestom 1. januára 1989 na základe uznesenia vlády z 30. novembra 1988 — asi jedenásť mesiacov predtým, ako Nežná revolúcia tú vládu zmietla.

  11. since 1993od roku 1993 Swiss glass and an open borderŠvajčiarske sklo a otvorená hranica

In independent Slovakia the glassworks was privatised, and since 2002 it has belonged to the Swiss Vetropack group; it still makes container glass around the clock. About six thousand people live in the town's four parts, many of them commuting the quarter of an hour to Trenčín or to the engineering works at Dubnica nad Váhom. The Vlára pass is a border again — but an internal one inside the European Union, which means it is a line on a map and nothing more. Downstream, the pilgrimage to Skalka still fills the rock every July, nine hundred years after the hermit.V samostatnom Slovensku sklareň sprivatizovali a od roku 2002 patrí švajčiarskej skupine Vetropack; obalové sklo sa v nej vyrába nepretržite. V štyroch mestských častiach žije okolo šesťtisíc ľudí a mnohí z nich dochádzajú štvrť hodinu do Trenčína alebo do strojární v Dubnici nad Váhom.
