Nemšová stands on the Váh a few kilometres north of Trenčín, at the mouth of the Vlára valley. That valley is why the town matters: it is one of the few easy ways through the White Carpathians, and both a road and a railway use it to reach Moravia.Nemšová leží na Váhu pár kilometrov severne od Trenčína, pri ústí doliny Vláry. The storyHistória
Nemšová is recorded from the Middle Ages as a village on the Váh road, belonging to the estates that controlled this stretch of the valley. It stayed a village for six hundred years and was raised to a town only in the 1990s, which is why it still reads as a large village with a factory rather than as an old urban place.Nemšová sa spomína od stredoveku ako dedina pri považskej ceste, patriaca panstvám, ktoré ovládali tento úsek doliny. Dedinou zostala šesťsto rokov a mestom sa stala až v 90. rokoch — preto dodnes pôsobí skôr ako veľká dedina so závodom než ako staré mesto.
Glass is what changed it. A glassworks was built here in the twentieth century, making bottles and jars, and grew into the largest employer for miles around; since 2002 it has belonged to the Swiss Vetropack group and still makes container glass for the food and drink trade. Everything else in the town's modern history — housing, schools, the shape of the built-up area — followed the works.Zmenilo ju sklo. The Vlára pass has been a trade route for as long as there has been trade here, and the railway built through it in the nineteenth century tied this corner of the Váh valley to the Moravian towns on the far side of the mountains.Vlárskym priesmykom sa obchodovalo, odkedy sa tu obchoduje, a železnica postavená cezeň v 19. storočí zviazala tento kút Považia s moravskými mestami na druhej strane hôr.

Skalka nad Váhom, a few kilometres downstream towards Trenčín, is the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia. The hermits Svorad and Benedict lived in the rock above the river in the early eleventh century, and a monastery was later built on the spot; what stands there now is a ruin on a crag with a chapel, and the July pilgrimage still fills it.Skalka nad Váhom pár kilometrov po prúde smerom na Trenčín je najstarším pútnickým miestom na Slovensku. The Vlára valley is the other direction to take: a narrow wooded valley climbing to the pass, with marked paths onto the ridge of the White Carpathians and across into the Czech Republic. The range here is a protected landscape area, and its hay meadows are among the most species-rich grasslands in Europe.Druhým smerom je dolina Vláry: úzka zalesnená dolina stúpajúca k priesmyku, so značenými chodníkmi na hrebeň Bielych Karpát a ďalej do Česka. In the town itself there is the parish church, the riverside, and the flat land along the Váh, which makes for easy cycling — the marked route along the river passes this way.V samotnom meste je farský kostol, nábrežie a rovina pozdĺž Váhu, ktorá je dobrá na pokojnú cyklistiku — vedie tadiaľto značená trasa popri rieke.
Work and industryPráca a priemysel
The glassworks is the town's economy and has been for generations; container glass is made continuously, day and night, because a glass furnace cannot be switched off. Around it are a farm co-operative working the flat land by the river, small engineering and building trades, and the cross-border traffic through the pass.Sklárne sú hospodárstvom mesta už po generácie; obalové sklo sa vyrába nepretržite, vo dne i v noci, lebo sklárska pec sa nedá vypnúť. The railway from Trenčianska Teplá up the Vlára valley to the Czech border runs through Nemšová, and buses to Trenčín are frequent.
