In 1979 the greater part of the built-up village was declared a reserve of folk architecture, with 157 protected structures — one of only ten such reserves in Slovakia. The important word is whole: not three photogenic cottages but the entire street, the gates, the fences, the barns and the way all of it sits on the medieval strips. The protection arrived while the village was thinning out rather than while it was full, which is the usual and uncomfortable order of events in heritage — a place tends to become precious at exactly the moment it stops being ordinary. It is still the honest way to read Osturňa today.Roku 1979 vyhlásili prevažnú časť zástavby za pamiatkovú rezerváciu ľudovej architektúry so 157 chránenými objektmi — je to jedna z desiatich takýchto rezervácií na Slovensku. Dôležité slovo je celá: nie tri fotogenické chalupy, ale celá ulica, bránky, ploty, maštale a to, ako všetko sedí na stredovekých pásoch. Ochrana prišla vtedy, keď obec redla, nie keď bola plná — čo je zvyčajné a nepríjemné poradie v pamiatkovej starostlivosti: miesto sa stáva vzácnym presne vo chvíli, keď prestáva byť obyčajným. Aj dnes je to najpoctivejší kľúč k čítaniu Osturne.
