The town appears in writing for the first time in 1292 under the name Libenow; the castle above it is first named in 1311. In 1323 King Charles Robert gave Ľubovňa and Plaveč castles to Filip Drugeth, one of the most powerful men in the kingdom and soon its palatine — which tells you how seriously the crown took this frontier. In 1342 Louis the Great granted the settlement town privileges. Everything here turned on the road: goods going north to Kraków and south into Hungary stopped here, paid here and were counted here.Mesto sa v písomnostiach objavuje prvý raz v roku 1292 pod menom Libenow, hrad nad ním v roku 1311. V roku 1323 dal kráľ Karol Róbert ľubovniansky a plavečský hrad Filipovi Drugetovi, jednému z najmocnejších mužov kráľovstva a čoskoro palatínovi — čo dosť presne hovorí, ako vážne brala koruna túto hranicu. V roku 1342 udelil Ľudovít Veľký osade mestské výsady. Všetko sa tu točilo okolo cesty: tovar smerujúci na sever do Krakova a na juh do Uhorska tu zastavil, zaplatil a dal sa spočítať.
