On 28 January 1299 King Andrew III granted Sabinov, together with Prešov and Veľký Šariš, the bundle of liberties known as the Spiš rights: the right to elect its own judge and its own parish priest, its own court, the right to hunt and fish, and freedom from taxes, tolls, customs duty and military service. Read that list again — it is a settlement buying its way out of being somebody's property. From that day Sabinov's legal standing was different, and it is fair to call it the town's birthday. Everything built here afterwards, from the walls to the church, was paid for out of what those liberties made possible.Dvadsiateho ôsmeho januára 1299 udelil kráľ Ondrej III.
