Hungarian county histories put the founding of Sabinov in the twelfth century and its first flourishing at the end of that century and the start of the next, and credit it to Flemish settlers — colonists brought east by the kings of Hungary, who wanted people who understood towns, markets and law. Nothing written survives from that time, so this is a reconstruction rather than a record, and it should be read that way. Z tej doby sa nezachovala nijaká písomnosť, takže ide skôr o rekonštrukciu než o doložený záznam a tak sa to má aj čítať. Isté je, že keď sa Sabinov konečne v listine objaví, opisuje sa už ako rozvinutá kráľovská obec, nie ako nová osada.
