In the autumn of 1944 the front came back over the same ridges. On 21 September 1944 Soviet troops took Kalinov, a village of this district — the first place on Czechoslovak soil to be liberated in the war, and it is remembered here for that. The fighting then ground on for weeks. German troops burned Borov, today part of the town: 53 houses destroyed and 33 badly damaged. Medzilaborce itself was taken on 26 November 1944, and the battle for it left the town wrecked.Na jeseň 1944 sa front cez tie isté hrebene vrátil. 21. septembra 1944 obsadili sovietske vojská Kalinov, obec tunajšieho okresu — prvú obec na československom území oslobodenú v tejto vojne, a práve preto sa na ňu tu pamätá. Potom sa boje ťahali celé týždne. Nemeckí vojaci vypálili Borov, dnes časť mesta: 53 domov zničených a 33 ťažko poškodených. Samotné Medzilaborce padli 26. novembra 1944 a boj o ne nechal mesto v troskách.
