The end of the seventeenth century in Upper Hungary was one long civil war. Imrich Thököly's revolt against the Habsburg emperor — Hungarian nobles fighting Vienna with Ottoman backing — rolled through these counties in the 1680s, and armies of both sides lived off the villages they passed through. In the middle of it, in 1684, the Humenné estate passed from the Drugeths to the Csáky family, and Medzilaborce with it. To the people here the change of landlord mattered far less than the war: a valley on the road to a mountain pass was the wrong place to own a cow.Koniec 17. storočia bol v Hornom Uhorsku jednou dlhou občianskou vojnou. Povstanie Imricha Thökölyho proti habsburskému cisárovi — uhorská šľachta proti Viedni, s tureckou podporou v chrbte — sa v osemdesiatych rokoch prevalilo aj cez tieto stolice a vojská oboch strán žili z dedín, cez ktoré prešli. Uprostred toho, roku 1684, prešlo humenské panstvo z Drugetovcov na Čákiovcov a s ním aj Medzilaborce. Pre tunajších ľudí znamenala výmena zemepána oveľa menej než vojna: dolina pri ceste na horský priesmyk bola zlé miesto na to, aby človek vlastnil kravu.
